The trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange grew 50% in May to €72.2 bn.

Equities

The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in May was €72.2 billion, up 50% year on year. The trading volume in the first five months reached €341.4 billion, up 27.4% from the same period a year earlier.

The number of trades to May reached 28.7 million, up 66.4% from the same period a year earlier. The number of trades in May came in at 5 million, up 56.7% year-on-year.

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume to May came in at €4 billion, up 225% from the same period a year earlier while in May it reached €459.3 million, up 39.3% from the same period in 2013.

At 42,848, the number of ETF trades to the end of May was 70% higher than in the same period in 2013, while in May it reached 6,211, up 26.5% year on year.

As for the Warrants and Certificates segment, the trading volume to the end of May was €364.4 million, up 8% from the same month in 2013. In May, the trading volume in this segment was €86.8 million, up 29.1% from the same period in 2013. The number of Warrants and Certificates admitted to trading in 2014 stands at 3,449.

Futures and Options

The trading volume in May in the Derivatives market came in at 4.4 million contracts, up 30.6% year-on-year. From January to May the trading volume totaled 23.7 million contracts, 17.4% higher than in the same period last year.

Most segments in this market reported growth in May, with heavy trading in Futures on Stocks, at 1,453,911 contracts and a 240.3% year-on-year rise. From January to May there were increases in all products, in particular Options on Indices, with 2,905,994 contracts traded and year-on-year growth of 52.7%.

Corporate Debt

The trading volume on the Corporate Debt market in May reached €128.1 billion and from January to May it totaled €629.2 billion, down 6.5% year-on-year, although trading to maturity increased 12.5%, at €159 billion.

The trading volume on the SEND platform in May reached €224 million and €1.4 billion from January to May, up 25% year-on-year, with heavier volume in Public Debt, at €99 million, more than four times as high as in the same period in 2013.

In May trading on BME’s Public Debt wholesale electronic platform, SENAF, reached €11 billion while it totaled €47.5 billion in the first five months of the year, more than double the amount reported for the same period last year  (115.99%).
