The Spanish Stock Exchange traded €74.2 billion in January

  • The number of equity trades in January was 5.2 million
  • In January the trading volume in ETFs exceeded €766 million
  • The traded volume in Stock Futures in January was up 35% year on year
  • Corporate Debt trading in January reached €13 billion in January and the volume of Public Debt traded on SENAF was €9.5 billion, up 1.7% year on year

Equities

The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in January was €74.2 billion, up 10%from December 2015 and down 21% year on year.

The number of trades in January reached 5.2 million, up 14% from the previous month and down 25% year on year. 

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume in January came in at €766.6 million, down 18% from the same month a year earlier. The number of ETF trades in January in this segment came in at 15,334, up 8% from the preceding month and down 1% from a year earlier. 

The trading volume on the Warrants and Certificates market in January reached €64.2 million, down 1% from the preceding month and down 41% year-on-year. The number of trades in January in this market totaled 15,427, up 1% from December 2015 and down 37% from January 2015. The number of warrants and certificate issues admitted to trading in January reached 554, up 68% year-on-year. 

Futures and Options  

In January the nominal amount traded on BME’s Derivatives Market decreased 5.4% year-on-year to 3.3 million. It is worth mentioning the heavy trading in Stock Futures, with 624,455 contracts traded, up 35% year-on-year. Trading in Index Futures was down relative to January 2015, with 667,828 IBEX 35 Futures and 292,056 Mini IBEX Futures contracts traded, down 8% and 23% year-on-year respectively. January 2015 was the most active month for these contracts. 

In January the trading volume in Index Options came in at 367,798 contracts, up 1% from January 2015. The open interest on these contracts was above 1 million contracts at the end of January, up 61.6% from January 2015.  

Corporate Debt 

The trading volume on the Corporate Debt market in January came in at €13 billion, down 73.7% year on year. The volume of new issues in January reached €21.1 billion, down 26.4% from January 2015. 

The trading volume on the SEND electronic trading platform reached €58.7 million, down 56.4% from January 2015, although it grew 19.3% from the previous month, December. 

In January trading on BME’s Public Debt wholesale electronic platform, SENAF, reached €9.5 billion, up 1.7% year on year.
