Equities
The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in 2016 totalled €652.9 billion, down 32.1% from a year earlier but in line with the generalized downward trend in trading volumes across world stock markets. In December the trading volume reached €48.9 billion, down 27.5% from the same month a year earlier.
The number of trades in 2016 reached 54.4 million, down 12.1% year on year. In December the number of trades was 4 million, down 11.8% from December 2015.
As for the ETF segment, the trading volume in 2016 totalled €6 billion, down 52.2% from a year earlier. In December the trading volume was €390 million, down 58.2% from the same month in 2015.
The total number of trades in ETFs in 2016 reached 151,310, down 12.6% from a year earlier. The number of trades in December totaled 10,028, down 29.7% year-on-year.
Activity on the Warrants and Certificates market during 2016 reached €715 million, down 34.7% from the same period in 2015. In December, the trading volume came in at €51.5 million, down 20.6% year on year. The number of warrant and certificate issues admitted to trading in 2016 totalled 7,642, up 7% from the same period in 2015.
Futures and Options
The trading volume in the Derivatives market in December reached 6.4 million contracts, up 80% from the preceding month. The trading volume in 2016 was down 5.1%.
In December the trading volume in IBEX 35 Impacto Dividendo Futures was 18,164 and 91,365 Futures on Stock Dividends, posting respective increases of 270.3% and 27% year-on-year. Trading in these contracts in 2016 increased 78.6% and 26.1% respectively, compared to 2015.
Trading in Stock Options also trended positively with 3.8 million contracts traded, up 7% from the same month a year earlier. The trading volume in 2016 increased 6.9% from a year earlier.
The trading volume in IBEX 35 Futures and Mini IBEX in 2016 was down 7.4% and 21.4% respectively from a year earlier.
Corporate Debt
In December the trading volume on the Corporate Debt market was €15.1 billion, of which €13 billion corresponded to trades at maturity, which grew 11% from the same month a year earlier. In 2016 the trading volume totaled €172.9 billion, down 66.4% from 2015.
New issues admitted to trading on the Corporate Debt market in December came in at €17.3 billion, up 19.3% from a year earlier while they totaled €130.1 billion for the entire year 2016, down 10.8% year-on-year.
New issues on MARF in December came in at €129 million, up 34% while the figure for the year 2016 totalled €2.2 billion, amply doubling the trading volume for the year 2015 (+174.3%).
In December Public Debt traded on SENAF, the wholesale electronic Public Debt platform, reached €14.2 billion, up 47.5% from December 2015. The trading volume in 2016 reached €174.8 billion, up 60.6% from the same period a year earlier.
